The history of

Our Region

The Douro Demarcated Region (the First Demarcated and Recognized Region in the World) was created in the reign of D. José I, by it’s Prime Minister and future Marquês de Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, by Law of 1756, which after undergoing changes over time was confirmed in 1921.

On December 14, 2001 it is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in the category of cultural landscape. The region is surrounded by mountains that give this particular mesological and climatic characteristics.

The long tradition of viticulture has produced cultural landscapes of exceptional beauty that reflects technological, social and economic evolution.

Soil

The region is formed by the ante-ordovic schist-grauvachic complex with inclusions of a structure of granitic nature. The geological composition provides protection against water erosion, good root and water permeability and high absorption of radiant energy with positive consequences on maturation and decrease in daytime thermal amplitude.

Climate

Hot and dry winds cause faster ripening and higher quality of musts. The Mediterranean type microclimate makes itself felt with very hot summers and very cold winters giving rise to concentrated, textured and varied wines, as only this region can offer.

Varieties

The varieties planted in our vineyards are divided into plots of white and red varieties.

The white grapes varieties are: Rabigato, Viosinho, Gouveio, Códega do Larinho, Malvasia Fina e Arinto. We also have a plot of old vineyards with about 20 grape varieties all mixed.

The red grapes varieties are: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz e Alicante de Bouschet.
